History of Hvalsta
Hvalsta Gård is situated in the municipality of Katrineholm in the heart of Sörmland, Sweden. The history of the farm dates back to the 16th century. It was bought by Kristina von Heland and Staffan Andersson in 1985, in those days the farm was used for cattle.
Due to Mrs. von Heland’s passion for horses, little by little the horses were taking over the establishment and soon a total refurbishment of the farm facilities made it possible to stable up until 24 horses and one or two ponies for the children. Hvalsta was used for traditional farming of grain and the horses were a nice hobby for Mrs. von Heland and their three children.
Then, in 1994, Mrs. von Heland was offered Prairie (IRE) a listed-race winner stallion. Mrs. von Heland could not resist the challenge and soon the Irish stallion arrived from Albarella, Italy to the farm in Sweden. Prairie brought many successful winners that Mrs. von Heland bread for other trainers in their name. However, some where kept under the name of Mrs. von Heland like Redskin (e. Prairie), that had great success in Italy.
After Prairie’s death in 1999, breeding continued with other successful and world-wide known stallions such as Funambule, Nicolotte and Bal du Seigneur. Now, Hvalsta is again hosting a magnificent stallion; Streetlight, brother of Street Cry, father of Street Sense, the 2007’s Kentucky derby winner. With such an outstanding stallion at Hvalsta, more weight has now been put on developing the breeding, with more broodmares, instead of traditional farming.
The Nordic climate results in a breeding of race horses, a bit late to start, although strong, tough and healthy. Not only the bloodline has been renewed with the arrival of Streetlight, but also the stable facilities have been modernized with the construction of a brand new barn for foals and yearlings. So now, a hobby has turned into a lifestyle, breeding strong talented racehorses, with a later start but greater stamina. Hvalsta has through years of breeding acquired the knowledge and know-how to bring up tough, strong and healthy racehorses.
